Connecting to Resources Across the State

As Big River Grocery continues to move from vision to reality, members of the Steering Committee recently took an important step forward by meeting with Jack Poff of the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center (ASBTDC) Mid-South and Peter Norman of the University of Arkansas Entrepreneurial Law Center Project.

Moving from Planning to Action

Big River Grocery is being developed as a member-owned grocery store designed to address food access, economic opportunity, and community connection in Helena, Arkansas. While much of the early work has centered on community engagement, feasibility studies, and visioning, the project is now entering a phase where legal structure and formal organization matter more than ever.

Meeting with ASBTDC and the University of Arkansas Entrepreneurial Law Center allows the Steering Committee to explore incorporation options, understand state-level requirements, and ask detailed questions about governance, liability, and compliance.

Connecting to More Resources

Beyond incorporation guidance, the meetings also opened the door to additional technical assistance and statewide resources. ASBTDC provides support for small businesses and startups across Arkansas, including help with business formation, financial projections, and operational planning. The Entrepreneurial Law Center Project offers legal education and support tailored to entrepreneurs navigating complex startup questions.

For Big River Grocery, these connections are especially important as the project continues to grow in scale and visibility.

“Each conversation leads to another resource, another expert, another opportunity to strengthen this project,” said a Steering Committee member. “We’re not doing this alone, and that’s incredibly encouraging.”

Laying the Groundwork for What’s Next

These meetings mark a turning point for Big River Grocery. With incorporation planning underway, the organization is preparing to take several next steps, including:

  • Finalizing governance documents

  • Continuing to build member-owner interest

  • Strengthening fundraising and partnership efforts

  • Positioning the project for future financing and investment

Just as importantly, the Steering Committee remains focused on keeping the community informed and involved as decisions are made.

As Big River Grocery moves forward, these early decisions will help ensure that when the doors eventually open, they open on a foundation built to serve Helena-West Helena and beyond for generations to come.
